Bronze disease is a cyclical corrosion process that requires chloide salt contamination (such as from seawater) oxygen and moisture. Chlorides cannot be removed by soaking in water alone.
How far to clean and what the final appearance should be are negotiated between the conservator and other experts such as curators.
